Windows might not read the user profile correctly, such as if antivirus software is scanning the computer while trying to log on. Before performing the troubleshooting steps, try restarting the computer and logging on with the user account again to check on the issue.If issue persists after reboot, then follow the below methods.

Quick Note :

  • Need to log on to another administrator account or boot the computer in safe mode with networking to perform the troubleshooting steps.
  • Before making any changes in your computer, I suggest you to create a System Restore point  so that you can restore back your computer to previous working stat if something goes wrong.

Fix “The User Profile Service failed the logon User profile cannot be loaded”

Method 1: Find the corrupted Profile Subkey in Windows registry.

  • In regedit, navigate to the location below:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Curren tVersion\ProfileList

  • In the left pane, click on a S-1-5 (SID) key with a long number.
  • In the right pane of the selected S-1-5 (SID) key, look at the Data value of ProfileImagePath to see if it is the user account with the error.
  • If not, then repeat check with all the keys until you have the correct S-1-5 (SID) key with a long number selected.

  • After locating the key, continue to next step depending on whether there is one or two S-1-5 (SID) keys listed with the exact same long number. One without .bak, and one with .bak at the end.

If you have Two S-1-5 (SID) keys with the Same Long Numbers

(This is if there are two S-1-5 folders (SID key) with the exact same long numbers, but the second one has .bak at the end of the long numbers and the first one doesn’t.)

  • In the left pane, right click on the first (top) S-1-5…..folder (SID key) that does not have .bak at the end of the numbers and click Rename.

  • Add .bk to the end of the numbers as in the below screenshot.

  • In the left pane, right click on the second S-1-5…..folder (SID key) with .bak at the end of the numbers and click Rename.
  • Remove only .bak from the end of the numbers and press Enter.
  • Now go back and Rename the first one with .bk to .bak now at the end of the numbers and press Enter.

  • In the right pane of the one without .bak now, right click on RefCount and click on Modify.

NOTE: If the RefCount is not available, then right click on a empty space in the right pane and click New and DWORD (32 bit) Value, then type RefCount and press Enter.

  • Set the value data to 0 and click enter.

  • In the right pane of the one without .bak now, right click on State and click on Modify.
  • Set the value data to 0 and click enter.

If you have Only One S-1-5 (SID) key with .bak

(This is if you have only one S-1-5 folder (SID key) with long numbers and ended with .bak.)

  • In the left pane, right click on the S-1-5…..folder (SID key) with .bak at the end of the numbers and click Rename.
  • Remove only .bak at the end of the numbers and press Enter.

  • In the right pane of the one without .bak now, right click on RefCount and click on Modify.

  • The registry will now look like the below screenshot for the one without .bak now.

  • Close registry editor and restart the computer.

Method 2: Delete the User Account and Create a New User Account

Create a new user account. Refer the this link to create a new user account.Copy the contents of the user folders from the old user account to the new user account.After copying all the data from old user account to new user account, delete the old user account (which was having the user profile issue) from the control panel. Refer the below link to delete the user account.

  • After deleting the old user account, open the registry editor.To do that, open RUN command and type regedit and press enter.

  • In regedit, navigate to the location below:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVer sion\ProfileList

  • In the left pane, click on a S-1-5 (SID) key with a long number.
  • In the right pane of the selected S-1-5 (SID) key, look at the Data value of ProfileImagePath to see if it is the user account with the error.
  • If not, then repeat check with all the keys until you have the correct S-1-5 (SID) key with a long number selected.

  • Right click on the selected SID key with the long number, and click on Delete.
  • If there is another SID key directly below the selected SID key with the exact same long number with .bak at the end, then right click on this same SID key with .bak on it, and click on Delete.
  • Close registry editor and restart the computer.
