Outlook error – This operation has been cancelled

Sometimes, the hyperlinks in the Outlook 2010 won’t work and when you click on it, it prompts the error “This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.” The issue most commonly seen in Windows 10 computer after installing the latest Windows Updates.

When Internet Explorer is set as the default browser in the computer and when you click on a hyperlink in the Microsoft Outlook, the following error message might pop up.

This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

How to fix the error “This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.”?

Quick Note: Before making any changes in the computer, we suggest you create a System Restore Point, so that you can restore back your computer to previous working state if something goes wrong.

As mentioned earlier, the issue occurs with the corrupted files in the Internet Explorer browser. Performing the browser reset might help you in fixing the issue with the above error message.

Reset Internet Explorer browser:

To reset Internet Explorer browser, follow the below resolution steps.

  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Tools and click on Internet Options.
  3. Then select Advanced and click Reset.

7. Now, select Tools and click on Internet Options.

8. Then click on Programs and select Set programs.

10. In the Programs list, select Microsoft Outlook > Set this program as default.

11. Search for Internet Explorer in programs list and highlight Internet Explorer and select Set this program as default.

12. Select OK and close the Default Programs dialog box.

Once it is done, now open Outlook in the computer and check if the hyperlinks working fine without the error message “This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.”

Reset Google Chrome browser:

If the default browser in the computer is Google Chrome, you can perform the browser reset to fix the issue.

To reset Google Chrome settings, follow the below steps.

  1. Launch Google Chrome browser, click on the three dots at the top right corner of the screen and click on Settings.

2. In the settings window, scroll down and click on Advanced option.

3. Again scroll down to the bottom and click on Reset column.

4. This would open a pop window asking you if you want to Reset, so click on Reset to continue.

This will reset the Google Chrome browser settings. Once it is done, open Outlook in the computer and check if the hyperlinks working fine without the error message “This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.” Hopefully, hyperlinks work fine without any error messages from now.

Reset Mozilla Firefox browser:

If the default browser in the computer is Mozilla Firefox, you can perform the browser reset to fix the issue.

To reset the Mozilla Firefox browser, follow the below steps.

  1. Launch Mozilla Firefox browser.
  2. In the address bar, type about:support and hit enter.
  3. It will launch the Troubleshooting Information. Click on the option Refresh Firefox.

This will reset the Firefox browser settings. Once it is done, open Outlook in the computer and check if the hyperlinks working fine without the error message “This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.” Hopefully, hyperlinks work fine without any error messages from now.
